In middle school I had a couple of friends that I thought I would have for the rest of my life. We wound up attending different high schools and practically never spoke again.

Now I encounter them on Facebook and hardly recognize them. I miss those relationships and wonder if we would have been such good friends if we met randomly as adults. And there isn't really any reason that we couldn't re-establish a friendship on some level past being "friends" on a social networking site except for the fact that we are completely different people now and it would seem needy. In reality it's just that I miss those friendships that I had as much as I value my existing ones.
